The Miami Metropolitan Area has an estimated population of over 5.4 million, making it the 7th most populous metropolitan area in the United Sates. Due to the proximity of the Everglades wetland area to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Miami metropolitan area is 180 km (110 miles) north to south, but never more than 32 k. (20 miles) east to west. Miami has the largest Latin American population outside characterized as Latin America, nearly 65% of its population is either from Latin America or of Latin American ancestry. Spanish is the language often used for day-to-day conversation, although English is used when dealing with business and government. It is not at all uncommon to meet a local who does not speak English at all, although this is generally not the case in larger tourist areas or the downtown district.

Each year millions of holiday makers from all over the world visit Miami. Most visit Miami for the beach life, the night life, the surrounding nature or just plain fun.

Downtown Miami is the city's nerve center, distinguished by its sleek skyscrapers, impressive government buildings and cultural centers and edged by the Port of Miami, the largest cruise ship port in the world. On the waterfront, the Bayside Marketplace is a popular entertainment arcade, clustered around a small harbour and with lots of bars, shops and market stalls.

The glamorous South Beach, with its white sand, palm trees and blue sea, is undoubtedly the trendiest part of town, the place to see and be seen and a magnet for celebrities and fun-lovers who enjoy its cosmopolitan atmosphere, designer shopping, upbeat restaurants and nightlife. Miami Beach is located on a long slender island connected to mainland Miami by four causeways. It comprises various coastal towns, each with its own personality.

Just west of downtown Miami is an area known as Little Havana. This colorful district has a distinctly Latin atmosphere with its Spanish signs and 800,000 Cuban-American living in there. South of downtown Miami is Coconut Grove, one of the city's oldest parts. It is a district with a bustling village atmosphere, full of colorful galleries, theaters, nightclubs, fine restaurants, cafés and shops.

Because of its proximity to equator, Miami's weather is often, but not always, warm. Summer temperatures can go over 37C (90 F), but this is seldom, the usual average is 5-10 degrees lower. During June to November, rain, thunderstorms and sometimes hurricanes can be expected to occur. The high season for tourists is January to April, the low season from June to September.
