With an area of 112,492 sq. km. Honduras is the second largest country in Central America, after Nicaragua. The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and north, northeast by the Golf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. The Honduran territory consists mainly of mountains, but there are narrow plains along the coast, a large undeveloped lowland jungle, La Mosquitia region, in the northwest, and the heavily populated lowland Sula Valley in the northwest. Several islands in the Caribbean Sea are also part of Honduras, among these are Islas de la Bahia (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja), the Hog Islands and Islas Santanillas, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, in the Golf of Fonseca, are the islands of El Tigre, Zucate Grande and Exposición.

The total population in Honduras is around 7.5 million. After Nicaragua, Honduras is Latin America's poorest nation, with some eighty percent of Hondurans living in poverty. Tegucigalpa is the capital and also the biggest city of the country. It is located in the southern part of Honduras, at an elivation around 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) and has a population of around one million. Tegucigalpa receives little foreign tourism, relative to other Central American capital cities. This largely due to its location far from beaches or volcanoes, its lack of tourist and cultural activity and its reputation of being notoriously dangerous.

There are though some very good and interesting tourist destination in Honduras. Among these are the Bay Islands or Islas de la Bahia (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) and the Hog Islands. A natural paradise in the Caribbean Sea. The reef surrounding the islands attracts beautiful fish, therefore snorkeling and diving is a must. Sea turtles, dolphins and whales swim in the waters around the islands. Copán is one of the most impressive ruins of the Maya civilization, known for the quality of its sculpture and considered one of the most artistically advanced and elaborate of all Mayan cities. Rio Plátano Biosphere Reserve - the largest tropical rain forest in Central America.

Honduras is a tropical destination with multiple weather regions: The hot and humid Caribbean, the mild central highlands and the hot and dry southern Pacific coast. In general temperatures remain consistent throughout the year. Honduras tend to be drier during the winter and wetter in October and November when hurricanes can hit. The hottest season is the spring. The high seasons for tourists are December to April and mid-June to August. Low season is September to November.
