Barbados is the easternmost of the Caribbean Islands, located to the northeast of Venezuela. It is just 38 kilometers (21 miles) long and 25 kilometers (14 miles) wide and covers a total area of 431 square kilometers. Barbados is a coral island, pushed out of the sea by volcanic activity many years ago. With 100 kilometers of coastline, Barbados has a deserved reputation as a beach destination. On the west coast, facing the Caribbean Sea, you find coral shore beaches of white sand and calm blue-green sea. For those looking to surf, the east coast towards the Atlantic Ocean, has some fantastic waves throughout most of the year. The south coast has a combination of both, and is a great place to windsurf and snorkel.

As a holiday destination, Barbados offers almost everything that you can want. From water-sports to golf and snorkeling. Coral reefs fringe the Barbados shoreline to provide excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Also the waters around Barbados provide some interesting game fishing with catches including blue marlin, white marlin, dorado, sailfish, swordfish, blackfin tuna, bonito and yellow fin tuna. Alternatively you can stroll the quaint streets of Bridgetown, the island's historic capital, and take advantage of the duty-free shopping. And at night, if you have any energy left, enjoy the island's variety of bars and clubs, including the famous Harbour Lights.

Even within the Caribbean, Barbados has an excellent climate. Temperatures vary by just a few degrees across the year, and because it is surrounded by sea, the island rarely gets to hot, except occasionally in summer, particularly if it is still. Generally though, there is a breeze to take the edge off that heat. The best time to visit is in the winter. The rainiest time of year is over the late summer months between August and late October. Often the sun comes back after a shower, but occasionally a blanket of clouds may cover the island for a few days. Barbados lies just at the edge of the hurricane belt, but is seldom seriously affected.

For its size, Barbados has a large international airport (Sir Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI)), with dozens of direct flights arriving from the UK and Canada as well as USA.
