The Yucatán Peninsula was the home of the Maya civilization before it was conquered by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century. Much of the population is partly or all of Maya decent, and in many places the Maya language is still spoken, usually in addition to Spanish, the main language of business. Starting in the late 20th century the Yacatan has become more integrated into Mexico, especially such areas on the Caribbean coast as Cancun and Chetumal, where many people from other parts of the nation have moved to take advantage of the economic opportunities of development. The Mayan Riviera stretching south from Cancun has seen the most growth related to tourism.

The most visited stretch of the coast incorporates Cancun and the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. These resorts and islands have become highly sought after package tour destinations with renowned vacation facilities.

Chichén Itzá, with its famous pyramids and temples, is Yucatán's most visited Mayan site, set in the jungle and said to have been inhabited for more than 2,000 years. It was the center of political and military power, and controlled trade in the region. The main attraction is the Pyramid of Kukulán, or El Castillo, a grand pyramid topped by a temple that dominates the site.

Playa del Carmen was once a sleepy village. But now it is one of the bustling tourist destinations of Mexico and a much visited tourist attraction in and around Cancun. The population doubled in the last few years. This is primarily because this place has all that in offer that other beach side destinations have and for a much lesser cost. The alabast-white beaches, gentle surf coral reefs and slow lifestyle are there to be enjoyed in Playa del Carmen . The Playa's dock serves as the pier for ferrying people to the island of Cozumel. So, it is just a short trip to Cozumel's incredible coral reefs. The boat trip is of approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) and on Cozumel you can go snorkeling, sea fishing, scuba diving and kayaking.
