Latin American Culture
Latin American Culture is very diverse and rich, and influenced by several different factors.

Before Christopher Columbus and the Europeans arrived there were many different Native American civilizations spread over Latin America. In Central America and Mexico the most notably among these were the Maya, who had built numerous cities throughout the region, and the Aztecs, who created a vast empire. Remains of these cultures can be found throughout this region. In South America and especially in the Andes region the Aztecs created a vast empire.

Since the 16th century a large number of Iberian colonists left for Latin America: the Portuguese to Brazil and the Spaniards to the rest of the region. An intensive race mixing between the Europeans and the Native Americans occurred and their descendants make up the majority of the population in several Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Honduras.

Starting in the late 16th century, a large number of African slaves were brought to Latin America, most of whom were sent to the Caribbean and Brazil. Nowadays, Blacks make up the majority of the population in most Caribbean countries. Many of the African slaves in Latin America mixed with the Europeans and their descendants make up the majority of the population in some countries, such as the Dominican Republic, and large percentages in Brazil and Colombia.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries large amounts of European immigrants arrived in Latin America, most of them settling in the Southern parts of South America (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and southern Brazil). In this same period, many immigrants also came from the Middle East and Asia, many of which came to Brazil.

This racial diversity has in many ways influenced religion, music and politics in Latin America and is one of the reasons why Latin America is such an exciting place to visit .

Today Pre-Columbian cultures are particularly notable in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay, not only because there are many important archaeological ruins from the Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations, but also because there are still significant Native American populations, especially in Peru, Guatemala and Bolivia, who mix Spanish cultural elements with their ancestors' traditions.
